A 2½ Day Professional Development Opportunity for Water Professionals
Snow School for Water Professionals is attended by people from organizations such as Bureau of Reclamation, CWCB, Denver Water, Desert Research Institute, and various Water Districts.
Using a mixture of classroom discussion and hands-on field sessions, this workshop will enhance participant understanding of snowpack processes, snowpack monitoring, and snowpack data, by:
- Reviewing Colorado’s snow climatology, snowpack formation, and snowmelt processes
- Discussing recent snow and climate literature
- Visiting snow and weather monitoring systems, discussing site biases
- Discussing snowpack, weather, and climate data sources, and their application
The workshop will be conducted by Center for Snow and Avalanche Studies director Jeff Derry. The classroom sessions will be held at CSAS’s Silverton office. The field sessions will be held at CSAS’s Senator Beck Basin Study Area and nearby Snotel and snow course sites on Red Mountain Pass.
Fee: $600 (class size will be limited to 10 participants – register early). Paying with credit card? Follow this link to pay online: https://snowstudies.org/product/snow-school-for-water-managers/

- CSAS Hosts Minnesota State University – Mankato Field Camp
- K-12 Kids Study Mountain Weather at Swamp Angel Study Plot
- CSAS Hosts Snow Characterization Workshop in Silverton. March 2008 Thanks to the initiative of Dr. Hans-Peter Marshall and Dr. Martin Schneebeli of the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF, the CSAS was able to host their fantastically successful, hands-on workshop in high-tech snow characterization methods and theory here in Silverton on March 18-20, 2008. Marshall and Schneebeli discussed and demonstrated methods for snow casting and X-ray tomography, snow micro-penetrometer measurement and signal analysis, near-infra-red photography and specific surface area characterization methods, and FMCW radar snowcover measurements and signal interpretation; Dr. Chris Hiemstra of Colorado State University also demonsrated the use of the MagnaProbe tool, another snow penetrometer tool used in extensive snowcover surveys throughout the Arctic and other shallow snowpacks. Photos of the Workshop can be seen on our 2007/2008 Diary page. All workshop participants agreed that this was a superlative experience and, for our part, we were honored to facilitate and participate.
